Edneer Mutt
Edneer Mutt is situated ten kilometers away from Kasaragod town towards northeast on the plains, by the side of the river, Madhuvahini. The mutt belongs to the line or parampara of Totakacharya, one of the four chief disciples of Shankaracharya. The chief deities in Edneer Mutt are Dakshinamurthi and Gopalakrishna.
According to the popular belief it is said that centuries ago Totakacharya gave Sansaya to a Sivalli Brahmin (Tulu Nambi) who migrated to Kerala from Tulunad and entrusted him with the work of looking after the tradition of Sivalli Brahmins.
It was Satchidananda Bharati, who was once the head of the mutt, who spread the glory of the place. His teachings and speeches imparted spiritual knowledge and gave solace to the people. Balakrishnananda Bharati who became the head of the mutt in recent times worked for the all round development of the mutt. It is learnt from copper plate inscriptions that it was during his time that the mutt and Vishnumangala temple were renovated.
Edneer became an important centre of education, arts and culture during the period of Srimadiswarananda Bharathi. He founded a Higher Elementary School and a High School at Edneer. The H.E.School which was under the management of District Board became a Government Upper Primary School after the transfer of Kasaragod to Kerala.
Very close to the mutt there is the temple of the Daiva Kuntipala Chamundi which is the guardian god of the mutt. Around the mutt there are four Bhoota Sthanas at Koorkapadi, Chambrampadi, Kandatteveed and Bhairamoole.
