Chandragiri Fort
Perched 150 feet above sea level on the lush banks of the Chandragiri River in Kasaragod, Chandragiri Fort is a 17th-century relic of Kerala's military and architectural heritage. Built by Shivappa Nayak of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, the fort once stood as a powerful sentinel at the meeting point of the Arabian Sea and the river-then known as the boundary between Kolathunadu and Thulunadu kingdoms. Sprawling across seven acres, the fort's laterite walls, though partially worn by time, still bear marks of ancient battles, including cannon imprints that hint at its turbulent past.
Designed for defense, the fort includes eight round bastions with cannon holes that allowed full view of incoming sea routes. Inside, one can find remnants of barracks, ruins of age-old structures, and even an underground tunnel. The main bastion, facing north, remains a key architectural highlight. Over the centuries, Chandragiri came under the control of various powers, including the Vijayanagara Empire, Hyder Ali, and the British East India Company. Excavations have revealed cannonballs, iron tools, and pottery, adding to its historical depth.
Today, the fort is preserved by the Kerala Department of Archaeology and draws visitors for its panoramic river and sea views, particularly its magical sunsets. With nearby attractions like houseboat cruises, island camping, and eco-tours, Chandragiri offers a perfect blend of heritage and natural beauty.
