Types of Diagnosis

The five main types of diagnostic methods in Ayurveda, according to Madhava, involve an examination of Purvarupa (prodromal symptoms), Rupa (manifested symptoms) and Samprapti (pathogenesis), and the conduct of Upasaya (therapeutic tests), and Ashtavidha Pareeksha (physical examination).

Purvarupa (prodromal symptoms) is a reference to the early signs of a disease, which eventually lead up to the full-fledged symptoms of the illness appearing in patients.

Rupa (manifested symptoms) is the set of problems and ailments that the patient brings to the notice of the vaidyan who then uses touch and percussion to judge the state of the individual's health.

Samprapti (pathogenesis) traces the onset of symptoms in the patient all the way from the Nidana stage, i.e., the personal and family medical history of the patient. Here, the status of metabolism, age and overall physical and mental condition of the patient play a crucial role in the diagnosis.

Upasaya (therapeutic tests) are the herbal remedies and lifestyle tips that work against the disease and its further propagation.

Ashtavidha Pareeksha (physical examination) is the special stage where a thorough examination takes place. The physician inspects the Nadi (pulse), the Jihva (tongue), the Sabda (voice), the Sparsa (touch), the Drik (eyes), the Akruti (appearance), the Mutra (urine), and the Mala (faeces)of the patient.
