Sources of Dravyas

Dravyas are obtained from three sources: Jamgama - animal sources, Bhauma - mineral sources, and Audbidha - vegetable sources.

Jamgama or animal-centric sources include honey, milk, milk products, fat, bile, bone, bone marrow, tendon, horn, flesh, blood, semen, excreta, and urine.

Bhauma or mineral sources include gold, silver, copper, tin, lead, iron and their oxides, arsenious sulphide, arsenious disulphide, salt, calcium, and antimony.

Audbidha or vegetable-based sources come in four types. These are vanaspati (trees that bear fruit without flowers), vanaspatya (trees whose fruit develop from flowers), oshadi (plants which die after their seeds develop) and viruth (creepers). Ancient texts detail the different ways in which these vegetal parts -from the root to the flower to the bark - can be effectively utilized.
