Five Great Elements and Human Pathology

The physical universe we perceive is made up of the Pancha Maha Bhutas or the Five Great Elements which are Akasha (Ether or Space), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jala (Water) and Prithvi (Earth). Ayurvedic philosophy teaches us that the Maha Bhutas are present in everything, from the chemical reactions inside us to the massive natural wonders that we see outside. They form the core of all physical matter.

Akasha is the first of the five elements. It is subtle, immeasurable and constantly expanding. Vayu is light in weight and it is associated with movement and tactile sense. Agni is a warm and bright element responsible for everything that involves transformation. Viscous and cold, Jala is said to be essential for all lifeforms. The final element Prithvi is strong, firm and the most concrete among all five. Ayurveda teaches us that these elements, on their own or in combination, are responsible for each and every physical phenomenon we witness.
