Since Kerala has a high incidence of deaths due to snakebites, St. George who is known for killing a snake, became popular quickly. The devotees from Tamil Nadu who visited Malayattoor church, used to participate in the Feast of St. George also. Offerings to the Saint included snake pits, eggs and cocks made in silver, as the snake is the enemy of the cock. Catholics still offer fowls to prevent the attack of snakes.
The ‘Çhicken Feast’ at Edappally St.George church is very famous. The same offering is there in Arthungal, Edathua, Puthupally and Angamaly, but the most popular church for this is the one at Edappally. The offered fowls are cooked on the church premises itself and served along with the feast.
