The land for setting up St. George's Miraculous Syro Malabar Catholic Forane Church in Edappally in the 6th century is believed to have been given free of tax by Elankaloor Swaroopam. Syrian Christians are believed to have met here after the Kunankurissu Sathyam. Three churches stand at the same spot at present. Other than the old one and Valiya Pally, another one was constructed recently. St. George church is considered to be the biggest church in Asia.
The annual Edappally Perunnal festival of the church is considered to be one of the biggest in Central Kerala. It begins on April 23 and ends with the Feast and the procession on May 5. The Thiruswaroopam (idol) of Edappally Punyalan which is believed to have divine powers is taken out at that time. The Ezhunnallathu (procession) goes around the markets and lasts for hours. St. George is considered to be the saint who protects people from snake bites. The Hen is the main offering. The chicks reared for offering is offered to the church and it would be auctioned. People cook them on the church premises itself. A lot of devotees from Ernakulam and Thrissur districts reach here with their offerings.
