Alapra Thacharikkal Bhagavathi Temple
Alapra, nestled in the southeast corner of Kottayam district near Erumeli, is one of the most picturesque villages in the region. This enchanting village is home to the mystical Alapra Thacharikkal Bhagavathi Temple, uniquely set amidst a dense forest. It is renowned for being the only place in Kottayam where the legendary ritual art form of Padayani is performed, adding a rich cultural layer to its natural beauty.
The village is adorned with majestic views, luscious waterfalls, and ancient caves, creating a sense of mystique that attracts visitors seeking both spiritual and natural experiences. One of the most notable features within the forest is Oottupara, a massive rock located 3 km from the temple, accessible only by a trekking path. According to local legend, Lord Rama visited this rock during his exile and arranged a feast for holy men, hence the name Oottupara, which means "dining rock." This site offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding natural beauty, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts.
The forest area around Alapra is rich in historical significance, dotted with holes, muniyaras (ancient burial sites), and kallaras (stone tombs), which reflect the ancient cultural heritage of the region. The Manimala River, originating from the hills of Kottayam-Idukki high ranges, flows through this forest, eventually merging with the Pampa River. The Oottupara rock provides an excellent vantage point to witness the glittering river as it cascades over rocks, enhancing the scenic splendor of the area.
Alapra offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spiritual tranquility, making it a must-visit destination in Kottayam. Whether you are trekking through the dense forests to reach Oottupara, exploring ancient caves, or experiencing the vibrant performance of Padayani at the Thacharikkal Bhagavathi Temple, Alapra promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Kerala’s cultural and natural landscape.
