Aymanam
Aymanam village in Kottayam district is an emerging gem, brought into the limelight by the Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission of Kerala. Nestled within the lush landscapes of God's Own Country, Aymanam offers a quintessential Kerala experience, blending natural beauty with rich cultural heritage.
Located about 10 km from Kumarakom and 8 km from Kottayam, Aymanam is a serene village bordered by the vast Vembanad Lake on its western side and the Meenachil River flowing through it. The village, described vividly in Arundhati Roy's Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things, is as enchanting as it is portrayed. The landscape is adorned with verdant paddy fields, lush coconut farms, and a network of canals, creating a picturesque setting that attracts migratory birds each summer.
Aymanam is a part of the RT Mission's Village Life Experience packages, which aim to showcase the unique charm and cultural richness of Kerala's lesser-known hamlets. Visitors can explore some of Kerala's most sought-after heritage buildings, religious shrines, and vibrant art forms here.
One of the highlights is a visit to Thekkedathu Mana in Kudamaloor, a historical edifice that houses the sword and palm leaf scripts of the Raja of Chembakasseri. The site also features a sacred Sarpa Kavu, the abode of Snake Gods, where offerings can be made.
The village also offers the opportunity to witness traditional Kerala art forms such as Kathakali, Kalamezhuthu, Kalaripayattu, and Thiruvathirakali, organized by the RT Mission. Additionally, visitors can admire the intricate murals at the Pandavam Sree Dharmasastha Temple, explore the tranquil St. Mary’s Church in Kudamaloor, and retrace the sacred footsteps of St. Alphonsa at her birthplace.
For those interested in understanding local governance, a visit to the Aymanam Village Office can provide insights into the workings of local administration. The RT Mission also ensures that visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant festivals and cultural celebrations of Kerala, adding to the richness of the experience.
Whether it's a relaxing cruise through the backwaters, a cultural exploration, or simply soaking in the tranquil beauty of the village, Aymanam offers a unique and unforgettable experience for every traveler.
These digital guides serve as invaluable tools for travellers planning their Kerala vacations.
Envisaged with a ‘triple bottom-line’approach that comprises economic, social and environmental responsibilities, Responsible Tourism (RT) as a concept came forward in 1996. Kerala initiated Responsible Tourism in February 2007 with the State level consultative meeting titled ‘Better Together’. The activities of the Responsible Tourism were implemented in a phased manner in the State.
Explore the less-explored life of Kerala with the Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission. The villages of Kerala are powerhouses of artistic skills and unique craftsmanship. We are ready with our Village Life Experience packages to bestow you the mystic charms of the sleepy hamlets of God's Own Country.
