Bhoothathankettu Dam
In the midst of the lush green forests and tall mountains of Ernakulam district lies a place of mystical allure and historical significance - the Bhoothathankettu Dam. The name "Bhoothathankettu" translates to "Ghost Fort" in Malayalam. The name itself hints at the legends and folklore that shroud this captivating destination.Â
Locals believe that the dam was first constructed ages ago by ‘Boothams’ or ghosts. According to local legends, once upon a time, demons decided to dam block the Periyar river by building a dam across it to flood the area and submerge the nearby Trikkariyoor temple, whose presiding deity is Lord Shiva. Having understood their plans, Lord Shiva made it appear like dawn was approaching and made the sound of a rooster crowing. This makes the demons run away without completing their work. The people of older generations firmly believe that the massive rocks seen today on the riverbed are the ones that the demons had placed in their attempt to dam the river.Â
It is also believed that there was once a thriving civilisation on the banks of the Periyar River here. The forests on either side still have remains of wells, walls, pieces of pottery, ruins of an ancient temple and the like.Â
Located at a distance of about 10 kms from Kothamangalam and 50 km from Kochi, the dam is situated just outside Pindimana village. Renowned as one of the most picturesque dams in the state, the trekking trails here are considered to be among the best in the state. While trekking through the forests here is considered to be among the best ways in which to enjoy the natural beauty of the destination there are also boat riding facilities available here that will help you tap into an entirely different experience altogether. The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary at Thattekkad is close by and so it is commonplace to spot migratory birds in the area.Â
A heady concoction of mystical tales, verdant vistas and the ever graceful Periyar River. In the midst of the rugged terrain of the Bhoothathankettu Dam lies a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered and explored.Â
