Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls
The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, often mentioned together due to their close proximity to each other, are located between Neriamangalam and Adimali in Idukki district, Kerala. It is a popular stopover for tourists traveling to Munnar, a hill station of South India. The area around the waterfalls is home to rare species of plants and animals because of which it is designated as an eco-tourism destination.Â
Cheeyappara, a waterfall with a different view
Cascading down rocky slopes, Cheeyappara is a magnificent seven-tier waterfall with water descending from a height of 1000 feet. It is a unique experience to stand close to the water, near the bottom of the waterfalls and watch the cascading water. You can take a dip in the pool of water formed below or enjoy the spray of cool water. In the mornings, sometimes you can see a beautiful rainbow on the spray of water.Â
Valara Falls, a scenic spot
The nearby Valara Waterfalls complements Cheeyappara with its own lush greenery and is a lovely picnic location. Valara Falls lies amidst several other tiny cascades which are part of the chain of waterfalls in the Deviyar River originating from the Western Ghats. The view is spectacular in the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons when the falling cascade makes the air around it misty. But during the summer season, the volume of water here is low.
Trekking and photography
The Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls are among the most popular trekking destinations in Idukki district. You can indulge in trekking amidst dense forests where you can spot many different species of animals and birds. Forest walks and rock-climbing activities are also organized here.Â
Photography enthusiasts love to take pictures of the waterfall against the backdrop of the forests and the valley opposite the waterfalls.
A taste of the local food
While you are in the area, you can experience local delicacies from stalls set up by local food vendors. In their makeshift stalls they sell hot tea, coffee and other tasty snacks. Tender coconut water, pineapples and watermelons are also sold in the makeshift stalls.
