Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple
The Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, located near Mavelikkara town, in Alappuzha district, is famous for its Bharani festival that draws large number of people from the Central Travancore region. Â
Held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (Feb-March), the festival features the spectacular Kettukazhcha, a procession of elaborately decorated effigies of horses and bullocks, and Kuthiyottam, a form of ritual dance to appease Bhadrakali, the main deity of the temple.
Sree Bhadrakali
The principal deity at the Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple is Sree Bhadrakali. Bhadrakali is an incarnation of supreme mother Shakti Devi, born from the third eye of Lord Shiva.
Folklore and Legends
There are several stories and beliefs about the origin of the temple. The most popular one is the construction of the temple by the villagers as a mark of retribution, following the humiliation and ridicule received from the Koypallikarazhma temple authorities.
The story goes that some Karanavers (elderly village heads) had gone to Koypallikarazhma temple, a few kilometres away, for the annual festival, and the temple authorities ridiculed them.Â
The Karanavers returned home and sought the blessings of Kodungallur Bhagavathi to construct a new temple. They then embarked on a pilgrimage to Kodungallur Bhagavati temple where they had divine vision that the Bhagavati will reach Chettikulangara.Â
A local boatman and an Antharjanam also experienced divine interventions that the Bhagavathi reached Chettikulangara, following which the temple was constructed in the village.
Festivals and Celebrations
The Chettikulangara Kumbha Bharani festival is celebrated with unmatched fervor and devotion. One of the most visually captivating aspects of the festival is Kettukazhcha, a grand procession featuring elaborately decorated chariots, effigies, and structures known as "kettu." These chariots, adorned with vibrant colours, intricate designs, and representations of deities, are paraded through the streets by enthusiastic devotees. The sheer scale and artistry of Kettukazhcha reflect the deep devotion and communal spirit of the local people, making it a must-see event for travellers and pilgrims alike.
Ethirelpu, meaning "reception" in Malayalam, is a ceremonial welcome for the deity during the festival. This ritual involves the procession of the deity's idol through the village, accompanied by traditional music, dance, and chanting. Devotees line the streets to offer their respects and seek blessings, creating an atmosphere of collective reverence and joy. Ethirelpu beautifully showcases the community's unwavering faith and the harmonious blend of spirituality and celebration.
Ritual Dance
Kuthiyottam is a ritual dance performed by young boys as part of the temple's annual festivities. The boys, often dressed in traditional attire, undergo rigorous training and fasting before the performance. The dance is a form of offering to the deity, symbolizing sacrifice and devotion.Â
Kuthiyottam is characterized by its rhythmic movements, vibrant costumes, and the fervent energy of the performers. This ritual not only showcases the cultural richness of the region but also instils a sense of discipline and spiritual growth in the young participants.
Travelers can also immerse themselves in the vibrant festivities, witnessing traditional performances like Kathakali and Ottanthullal.
