Dharmadam Island
Dharmadam Island, also known as Dharmadam Thuruth, is a small island near Thalassery, situated off the coast of Kannur district in Kerala. Situated just 100 meters away from Dharmadam Beach, this uninhabited island is popular among tourists seeking a tranquil picnic spot.
Covered with a dense canopy of coconut palms and bushes, Dharmadam Island, which is formed as a result of lateritic rock projection, is surrounded by rivers on three sides and the Arabian Sea on the fourth. The island which spans a mere 5 acres is referred to as 'Pachathuruth' or Green Island by the locals. Strolls along the island's periphery give a brilliant view of the confluence of the Anjarakandy and Thalassery rivers.
During low tide, one can walk to the island through shallow waters. You can also take a boat from the south end of nearby Moidu Bridge on the Kannur-Thalasseri highway and reach the island. Dharmadam Island is privately owned and entry is allowed only with prior permission.
Historical Significance
Dharmadam Island was known as Dharmapattanam, once a prominent Buddhist stronghold. Over the centuries, it attracted attention from various cultural groups including Jews, Arabs, Portuguese, and British settlers, each leaving their mark on its culture. The Jews and the Arabs called this place Dahfattan, the British named it Darmapatam and the Portuguese called it Darmapatao.
Ecological Importance
The island's ecological importance lies in its diverse flora, including medicinal herbs. Conservation efforts by the Kerala government aim to protect and preserve Dharmadam Island's natural resources.
The Island is known for its unique plant species. From a small stem of the pliant tree we can get a couple of glasses of water which tastes like herbal water. Another interesting tree is the nanchu (poison) tree. The fruit of this tree is used to catch fish by sedating them.
Muzhappilangad beach, the only drive-in beach in India, is located about 200 metres away from Dharmadam island. It has a beautiful 4 km stretch of sand where you can freely drive your car alongside the waves.
Established by the East India Company, the Thalassery Fort overlooking the Muzhappilangad Beach stands as a testament to the might of the imperial rulers. The fort served as a strategic point for British military operations on the Malabar Coast.
Dharmadom is also home to the famous Andalur Kavu temple. A 'Kavu' is a serpent grove where snakes are worshipped. The ancient temple is popular for its annual festival called Kaliyattam, based on the stories of Epic Ramayana.
