Edathua Church
Alappuzha is famed for a lot of things. Be it enchanting natural sights or ancient heritage structures, this district is blessed in every regard. To add to the charm of this quaint town, hidden here is yet another gem that has stood the test of time. A structure that stands tall reminding one of the medieval behemoths that dot Europe’s landscapes, the Edathua Church in Alappuzha district is indeed a sight to behold.Â
Located on the banks of the Pamba River about 15kms south-east of Alappuzha town, the church is a majestic structure and has gained fame as a reflection of Kerala’s architectural heritage. One of the statues here that has been crafted in a Persian artistic style is said to be centuries old. It is believed to have been brought to Edathua during the inception of the Edapally and Angamaly churches.Â
The Edathua Church has brought relief and stood strong as a source of solace to many an anxious devotee. People travel to this church from far and near in the belief that their medical issues, in particular mental health issues, will be healed in this holy site.Â
Dedicated to St. George, the St. George Forane Church was built in the year 1810 and is today, one of the biggest and most prominent destinations in the peaceful backwater district of Alappuzha. The annual feast of the church which is its yearly festival draws hordes of believers and tourists alike from across the world each year. Also renowned as the Edathua Perunnal, this annual feast is conducted between 27th April and 7th May every year.Â
Celebrated with much joy and gaiety the highlight of the festival is the procession in which a statue of the saint which is decked in gold is taken to the Basilica for special prayers. Following the prayers is a multitude of fetes and feasts.
Over the span of several centuries, the Edathua Church evolved into a revered pilgrimage site that is today a solace for thousands of devotees. People arrive to pay homage to its sanctity and to seek the blessings of its patron saint.Â
