Ezhimala, a prominent seven-peaked mountain located in the Kannur district of Kerala, stands 286 meters above sea level and is steeped in historical significance. The name "Ezhimala" is derived from the Malayalam words "ezhu" (seven) and "mala" (mountain), reflecting its unique geographical feature. Situated about 55 kilometers from Kannur and 7 kilometers from Payyannur, this region has a rich past that dates back to the Sangha period.
Historically, Ezhimala served as the headquarters of the Ezhimala kings and later the Mooshika kings. The area was a crucial center for trade during ancient times, frequented by Arab traders, and is believed to have been visited by Lord Buddha. Ezhimala was also the site of significant battles between the Chola and Chera dynasties in the 11th century. At the foothills of the mountain, visitors can find relics of this distant past, including burial chambers, carved stone pillars, caves, and granite platforms.
A walk up Ezhimala reveals the ruins of a mosque, believed to house the remnants of Shaikh Abdul Latheef, a Muslim reformist. The winding road to the hilltop is lined with a variety of herbs, adding to the area’s rich natural beauty. From the peak, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the Mount Dilli lighthouse, the ruins of an old fort, and a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, which features the tallest Hanuman statue in South India. The panoramic view also offers a glimpse of Payyannur town, with its rivers, roads, paddy fields, and coconut palms creating picturesque visuals.
Ezhimala is also home to the Indian Naval Academy (NAVAC), one of the largest naval academies in Asia. Located near Ettikulam Beach, the academy requires prior permission for entry. The beach itself is known for its unique texture of sand and its unusually blue sea, where dolphins can often be spotted at the Ettikulam Bay.
In addition to its historical and natural attractions, Ezhimala is close to several other tourist destinations, including the Sree Subrahmanya Swami Temple, Gandhi Park, Valiyaparamba, and Choottad Beach. The serenity and beauty of Ezhimala, combined with its rich historical background, make it a must-visit destination in Kerala.
