Vellamassery Garudan Kavu
The Garudan Kavu Temple at Triprangode on Chamravattom Road near Tirur in Malappuram district is the only major temple in India dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s carrier, Garuda, the mythical bird mentioned in Hindu and Buddhist texts.
The spiritual abode, also known as Thiru Vellamassery Garudan Temple, offers a mixed blend of spiritual enrichment and cultural immersion. The temple houses another shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Koormavatara (tortoise form). The rare idol of Kurma, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is a significant aspect of the temple.Â
Bit of History
The temple's origins are steeped in Indian folklore, legends and mythology. The temple is believed to be 1800 years old, with its roots tracing back to the early centuries of Indian civilization. The legends surrounding the temple tell tales of divine interventions and miracles attributed to Garuda, the divine bird and the mount of Lord Vishnu, making it a significant spiritual site for devotees.
This relatively obscure temple, dedicated to Garuda, the divine bird and mount of Lord Vishnu, is a hidden gem steeped in mystery and intrigue, waiting to be discovered. The Garuda deity in this temple is a rare form of half-eagle and half-man.Â
Grand Edifice
The temple's architecture will captivate the attention of any ordinary visitor. Traditional Kerala style is the key element of the design, interspersed with intricate woodwork, sloping tiled roofs, with teak wood pillars elaborately carved. The Garuda idol in flying form is unique to this temple, adorned with several other naga (serpent) sculptures and images from Hindu mythology.
Spiritual Solace
For the spiritually inclined, Garudan Kavu offers a tranquil and serene environment typically found around most temples in Kerala. The temple is particularly renowned for its unique rituals and ceremonies dedicated to Garuda.
Witnessing these rituals, often accompanied by Garudan Thullal, a traditional music and dance performance, provides a deep insight into the rich spiritual heritage of Kerala. Devotees often offer live snakes to the deity believing it will bring them cure from afflictions is an interesting aspect of the Kavu.Â
Many devotees and pilgrims visit this temple to offer prayers to the deity. Pilgrims en route to Sabarimala often stop at this temple.
Festival
The ideal time to visit the temple would be during major festivals. The annual Garuda Jayanthi, celebrating the birth of Garuda, is one such time to visit the temple. The festival is a grand affair marked by vibrant processions, cultural performances, and elaborate feasts. The entire temple complex, decked up with lights during the celebration, is a feast for the eyes. Local people from all parts of the region participate in the festival.
