The Gundert Bungalow, nestled in the heart of Illikunnu, is a historical gem that showcases the legacy of Dr Hermann Gundert, the revered German missionary, scholar and lexicographer. Dr Gundert lived in this bungalow for two decades, located far away from the quaint streets of Thalassery town in the Kannur district.
Architectural charm
The Gundert bungalow built in 1862, close to Kuyyali River, in the picturesque surroundings of Illikunnu, is constructed in the traditional colonial style incorporating design elements popular during the colonial period.
Spacious verandas, large windows and high ceilings are the hallmarks of the bungalow with lavish ventilation and cozy interiors. Laterite and wood formed the structure of the building with sloping red clay tiled roofs.
The bungalow, which exudes a sense of nostalgia and warmth, has undergone several restorations to preserve its structure. A protected monument, the bungalow is now maintained by local heritage organizations and government bodies. The Gundert Memorial Church and a cemetery are located near the bungalow.
Cultural Legacy
The first Malayalam newspapers Rajyasamacharam and Paschimodayam rolled out from the litho press set up at the Bungalow. During his stay in this bungalow, which saw several initiatives in the cultural history of Kerala, he published around 13 books in Malayalam including a translation of the Bible, Old Testament from Hebrew and New Testament from Greek. Dr Gundert laid the foundation for the modernisation of Malayalam language.
Gundert left India in 1859, but the bungalow continued to serve various purposes, primarily as a cultural and historical site symbolizing a cross-cultural exchange between Europe and Kerala during the 19th century.
Museum
The bungalow has now been converted to a museum which sheds light on the life and works of Dr Gundert. The museum, opened a couple of years ago, has different zones that narrate the life and works of the scholar who will always be remembered for his invaluable contributions to Malayalam language. The exhibits include rare books, manuscripts and artefacts that focus his contributions to Malayalam language and literature.
The museum houses a vast library dedicated to his grandson Hermann Hesse, who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1946, for his work Sidhhartha. The Julie Gundert Hall, the Gundert statue and the digital book archive are the other attractions.
