Haritha Bio Park is situated on the banks of the Periyar river in Panamkuzhy, Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, Kerala. Bio Parks are unique landscapes composed of different types of flora and fauna from terrestrial, marine, aquatic and other ecological sources. Launched in 2015, the Haritha Bio Park, with its large collection of ornamental fishes, exotic birds and a variety of plants has become a popular destination for nature lovers.
Ornamental Birds
Haritha Bio Park is home to a variety of ornamental birds. African lovebirds, Italian Bantam, Japanese Onagadori Kochi Bantam, Silver Lace, White Quail, Emu and Flying ducks are some of the unique attractions here. The park is also home to Kadaknath, a unique breed of chicken known for its black meat and native to Madhya Pradesh.
Fish Breeding Unit
The bio park has an ornamental fish breeding unit approved by the Marine Products Exporters Development Authority (MPEDA) of the Government of India. The unit has over a hundred varieties of ornamental fishes breeding in thirty fish tanks and ten ponds. Alligator gar and Arapaima, the largest among fresh water fishes, can be found here.
Hitech and Precision Farming Techniques
Haritha Bio Park uses hi-tech farming techniques to maximize cultivation potential while conserving resources. Through initiatives by the Kerala State Horticulture Mission and Department of Agriculture, the new farming techniques ensure optimal land and water usage, and address the challenges posed by limited availability of water resources and cultivable land.
Precision agriculture, also known as satellite farming or site-specific crop management, is practiced at the bio park. This technology uses satellite imagery data to give a comprehensive view of your farm's conditions. By observing, measuring, and responding to variability within crops, precision farming allows efficient farm management using sustainable agricultural practices. The park's precision farm utilizes advanced fertilization and irrigation systems developed in collaboration with the Kerala State Horticulture Mission.
Recreation and relaxation
Other than the opportunity to explore the beauty and biodiversity of the ecosystem, Haritha Bio Park also offers recreational activities for visitors. The park features a children's park where kids can play and a fishing area where fishing enthusiasts can indulge in their hobby along the banks of the Periyar river.
