The Indian School of Martial Arts (ISMA), also known as Kalariyil Dharmikam Ashram, is a premier institution dedicated to the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu. Established in 1983, ISMA has grown into a center for both the training and healing aspects of this traditional art form. Under the guidance of Mr. P. S. Balachandran Nair, a master practitioner hailing from a family of warrior-healers, ISMA has become a sanctuary for those seeking to learn Kalaripayattu and experience its associated therapeutic practices, known as Kalari Chikitsa.
Mr. Balachandran Nair believes that Kalari Chikitsa, or Kalari treatment, has its roots in Siddhavaidyam (a science parallel to Ayurveda), Dhanurveda (considered the mother of Ayurveda), and Olagranthas (ancient manuscripts on palm leaves). This holistic approach focuses on the 108 nerve pressure points, or marmas, in the human body, using traditional methods passed down through generations. The emphasis at ISMA is on intuition and experience, rather than modern medical parameters, ensuring that the teachings are both profound and rooted in centuries-old wisdom.
ISMA's facilities include a three-storey complex with a dedicated Kalari arena, where students train in Kalaripayattu. The center also houses a 600-year-old massage table crafted from a single tree, adding to its historical and cultural significance. Other notable features include a meditation hall and a roof garden, offering visitors an enriching and rejuvenating environment.
In addition to its primary center in Thiruvananthapuram, ISMA operates a second Kalari at Parasuvackal near Parasala. This 10-acre site has been transformed into a holistic center for Kalaripayattu, embodying the ancient Gurukula Sambradaya tradition where students live and learn with their master. The Parasuvackal center is self-contained, with farmland, water supply, and multiple training rings, creating an ideal setting for the in-depth study of Kalaripayattu and its related practices.
Recently, ISMA expanded to include a separate ashram dedicated to Kalari Chikitsa, featuring a large Kalari for treatment purposes and an expansive herbal garden. This development reflects ISMA's commitment to preserving and promoting the healing aspects of Kalaripayattu, alongside its martial traditions.
ISMA's significance extends beyond its role as a training center; it is also recognized as an important cultural attraction by the Kerala Department of Tourism. The school offers demonstrations and training in Kalaripayattu, meditation, Marma Chikitsa, and traditional massage, attracting tourists and martial arts enthusiasts from around the world. Many visitors are drawn to Kerala specifically to witness or participate in these ancient practices, making ISMA a key contributor to the region's cultural tourism.
Over the years, ISMA has earned a reputation for excellence, with the Kerala Sports Council's approval and registration under the All Kerala Sidha Vaidya Federation. Under the visionary leadership of Mr. Balachandran Nair, ISMA continues to uphold the traditional values and practices of Kalaripayattu, ensuring that this ancient martial art remains vibrant and relevant in the modern world.
