Kanakakkunnu Palace
Kanakakkunnu Palace, located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, is not only an architectural marvel but also a vibrant cultural hub. The palace, perched on a hillock, was believed to have been built during the 19th century under the reign of the erstwhile king of Travancore, Sri Moolam Thirunal. Originally constructed to serve as a guest house, this red-bricked structure with white stone dressings is a fine example of Kerala-Gothic Victorian-era architecture.
The palace’s design is both elegant and functional, featuring a dignified neoclassical entrance portico and a circular hall adorned with magnificent crystal chandeliers and exquisite pieces of royal furniture. The surrounding grounds are equally captivating, with meadows, groves, and flowering shrubs creating a serene atmosphere. The palace is also home to India’s first digital garden, where visitors can scan QR codes to learn about the various plants, including their botanical names, species, nativity, and distribution.
Today, the palace serves as a popular venue for a multitude of cultural events, seminars, and programs. Its close proximity to other important tourist sites, such as the Napier Museum and Trivandrum Zoo, makes it an integral part of the city’s daily life.
The palace grounds include two auditoriums—the Nishagandhi Auditorium, an open-air venue, and the Sooryakanthi Auditorium. The palace premises come alive during the all-India dance festival organized by the Department of Tourism, which runs from October to March. This festival attracts visitors from across the country who come to witness mesmerizing classical performances.
Kanakakkunnu Palace is also a popular meeting point for locals who enjoy its pleasant environment. In the evenings, the palace grounds buzz with activity as families and friends gather to unwind after a busy day.
With its unique blend of architectural beauty and cultural significance, Kanakakkunnu Palace remains a cherished landmark in Thiruvananthapuram, continuing to play a central role in the city’s cultural and social life.
