Located just 25 kilometres southeast of Kochi, Kanjiramattom is a serene village in Kerala known for its historic mosque and vibrant cultural traditions. The Kanjiramattom Mosque, also called the Sheikh Fareedudheen Mosque, is a revered place of worship built in memory of the Sufi saint Sheikh Fareedudheen, fondly known as Baba Fareed or Baba Gunju Shakkar. This mosque is not just a spiritual site but a beacon of communal harmony and cultural heritage.

Each year, Kanjiramattom comes alive during the Kodikuthu Festival, celebrated on January 14 (Makaram 1 in the Malayalam calendar). The highlight of this grand celebration is the ‘Chandanakudam’ ritual, where devotees carry ornately-decorated pots filled with offerings. The festival’s vibrant processions feature caparisoned elephants, traditional Chendamelam drumming, and captivating folk performances. Unique Muslim art forms like ‘Duff Muttu’ and ‘Mappilapattu’ add a touch of cultural richness, drawing crowds of pilgrims and tourists alike.

What makes Kodikuthu truly special is its inclusivity. People from all religions come together, dressed in their finest, to offer prayers and take part in the festivities. At the Melepalli (Upper Mosque), Hindu devotees break coconuts as part of their offerings, reflecting the deep interfaith harmony that defines this village. According to local traditions, Vavar Swamy, a companion of Sabarimala’s Sree Ayyappa Swamy, once stayed at the Melepalli, further intertwining the narratives of diverse communities.
