Keralam, Museum of History and Heritage
Keralam, a museum of history and heritage in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital city, is a joint venture between Kerala Tourism and the State Department of Archaeology. This museum aims to showcase the rich cultural and historical legacy of Kerala, offering visitors a deep dive into the state's past through its carefully curated exhibits. The museum features eight galleries, each dedicated to different aspects of Kerala's history and culture, including the Prehistoric Age, Iron Age, Early and Medieval History, Stone Sculptures, Wooden Sculptures, Bronze Sculptures, Art and Architecture, Traditional Art Forms, Musical Instruments, Mural Paintings, and Heritage of Kerala. Visitors are greeted by modern display techniques such as touch-screen counters and multimedia systems that provide detailed explanations of the artifacts. Regular screenings of narrative documentaries highlight distinctive facets of Kerala's cultural history, making the experience both educational and engaging.
Among the museum's notable artifacts are the Roman Dinari, which provides evidence of Kerala’s ancient trade relations with the Roman Empire, a 14th-century Brahma sculpture, a 16th-century Nataraja sculpture, and 17th-century murals from the Pundarikapuram Temple in Kottayam. The museum also houses archaeological evidence from the Neolithic Age, burial accompaniments from the Iron Age, and intricate sculptures of deities in bronze, wood, and stone. The blend of modern display techniques and historical artifacts creates a comprehensive and immersive experience for visitors.
