Kulamav Dam
Kulamavu Dam, an integral part of the Idukki hydroelectric project, is located in the Idukki district of Kerala. Constructed on Kilivillithode, a tributary of the Periyar River, the dam contributes to the formation of the expansive Idukki reservoir, alongside the Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthoni Dam. Together, these three dams create a 60-square-kilometer artificial reservoir, essential for hydroelectric power generation in the region. Completed in 1977, the picturesque Kulamavu Dam is operated and maintained by the Kerala State Electricity Board. The dam's upper section is constructed from concrete, while the lower part is made of masonry.
The water from this reservoir is channeled through a lengthy power tunnel and pressure shaft to an underground powerhouse located at Moolamattom, with an impressive installed capacity of 780 MW. Kulamavu Dam and its surroundings serve as an ideal picnic spot, attracting visitors with its natural beauty and opportunities for boat trips. The area offers scenic views, especially when the weather is favorable, though photography is restricted, and vehicles cannot be parked near the dam. Tourists can enjoy the dam's beauty from the Killivali viewpoint, situated 50 meters away from the structure. Additionally, the area is a haven for bird watchers, with species like snake birds and kingfishers frequently spotted.
Situated on the Thodupuzha - Puliyanmala State Highway (SH-33), Kulamavu Dam is approximately 23 kilometers from the Idukki Arch Dam, 22 kilometers from Cheruthoni Dam, and 38 kilometers from Thodupuzha. The dam’s construction was overseen by Superintending Engineer E.U. Philipose, with the project reaching completion in 1977. Today, Kulamavu Dam remains a vital component of Kerala's energy infrastructure and a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and trekkers alike.
