Bell metal craft and idol making
Kunhimangalam is home to nearly 100 families of bell metal artisans, known as Moosaris. They are craftsmen who possess special knowledge in crafting various idols, bell metal lamps and other artifacts using hands. This knowledge is inherited from generation to generation.Â
The area known as Mosaari Kovval neighbourhood now is a bell metal sculpting heritage cluster where about 15 artisans work to make traditional bell metal lamps, idols, curios etc taking inspiration from Indian mythology.Â
Panchaloha idols crafted here grace temples across the state and beyond. Besides panchaloha, idols are made in various other alloys, the intricate process of which is carried out in a single casting and each mould is used only once.Â
The craftsmen also make brass and bell items like chilambu (ankle ornament] and thalappali, the sacred ornament worn by Theyyams on the forehead.
Architecture
A stroll through the village will find you amid traditional Kerala-style houses with sloping tiled roofs, intricately carved wooden pillars, and spacious courtyards interspersed with large modern concrete houses.
The heritage homes, often surrounded by lush gardens, exude a sense of timeless elegance and are a testament to the village's rich cultural heritage.Â
Numerous ancient temples and Kavus dot the landscape. Notable temples in the village are: Aneekkara, Ayyankoolam, Veerachamundeswari (Moloth temple), Sree Malliyot Palott Kavu, Kadamkot Makkam Bhagavati temple.
Festivals and local rituals add colour to the village life, offering a glimpse into the vibrant traditions and customs of the region. Two churches and a main mosque cater to the spiritual needs of the Christian and Muslim community.
