Mangala Devi Temple
Within the dense forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the ancient Mangaladevi Temple stands as a testament to centuries of history and myth. Perched at an altitude of 1337 meters above sea level, this 1000-year-old temple is a sanctuary of spirituality and natural beauty.
Dedicated to the deity Mangaladevi, also known as Kannaki, the temple holds profound cultural significance. Kannaki's legend, immortalised in the Tamil epic Silapathikaram, depicts her as a symbol of moral fortitude and justice. The temple's architecture, reminiscent of Pandyan style, whispers tales of a bygone era, adorned with stone sculptures and remnants that hint at its former glory.
Today, the temple complex comprises four stone structures housing various idols, including Lord Shiva and Lord Ganapathy. Though in ruins, it retains an aura of reverence, especially during the annual Chithrapournami festival when devotees gather to worship the idol brought from Kambam, crafted from panchaloha.
Accessing Mangaladevi Temple is an adventure in itself, requiring a thrilling 12-kilometer jeep ride through dense forests and high altitude grasslands. En route, visitors are treated to glimpses of exotic flora and fauna, including the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and endemic orchids like Habenaria periyarensis.
The temple's location on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats and quaint hill villages nestled amidst lush greenery. It's a serene escape where nature's grandeur meets spiritual tranquility, perfect for those seeking a blend of cultural exploration and natural beauty.
To preserve its pristine ecosystem, access to the temple is restricted, requiring prior permission from the Wildlife Warden at Thekkady. The annual festival, celebrated during April/May on Chithrapournami, adds vibrancy to the temple with ritualistic prayers, floral decorations, and offerings of pongala - a sweet rice dish symbolising devotion and community spirit.
Discover Mangaladevi Temple, where history whispers through ancient stones and nature's bounty surrounds every step, offering a journey that resonates with spiritual seekers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
