Manjinikkara Dayara Church
Manjinikkara Dayara Church, situated atop a hill in Omallur, Pathanamthitta district, is one of Kerala's most revered pilgrimage sites, especially among Syrian Christians. This sacred church is the final resting place of Mor Ignatius Elias III, the Holy Patriarch of Antioch, who visited the site in 1931 and spent his final days there until his death in February 1932. The church, established by Mor Yulius Elias Qoro, has since become a spiritual sanctuary for countless devotees who seek peace and divine blessings in its serene surroundings.
The church's annual festival, known as Orma Perunnal, is celebrated in February and attracts a large number of pilgrims from across the world. The festival commemorates the life and contributions of Mor Ignatius Elias III, with special prayers and rituals conducted at his sacred tomb, located near the altar of the church. The church’s altar is adorned with images of the saint and Lord Jesus, and the tomb itself is a focal point for those seeking spiritual healing and solace.
During the Orma Perunnal festival, archbishops from other churches are often invited to lead the prayers and address the devotees, adding to the significance and grandeur of the event. Pilgrims participate in processions, prayers, and other religious activities, all of which contribute to the festive and welcoming atmosphere that Manjinikkara Dayara Church is known for.
The memory of Mor Ignatius Elias III is deeply cherished by the Syriac Orthodox Church, particularly in Malankara, where thousands of pilgrims journey by foot to the church each year to pay their respects. His tomb at Manjinikkara is unique, as he is the only Patriarch of Antioch to have been interred in Malankara, making this church a place of immense spiritual importance.
