Muloor Smarakam at Elavumthitta
Muloor Smarakam, also known as Muloor Memorial, is situated about 12 km from Pathanamthitta town in Kerala. This memorial is dedicated to Muloor S. Padmanabha Panicker (1869-1931), a celebrated social reformer and poet renowned for his humorous verses. The memorial, located at Elavumthitta, preserves Muloor's home as a monument, maintained by the Department of Culture of the Kerala State Government.
Born in the hamlet of Edanadu near Chengannur, Muloor was deeply influenced by Sree Narayana Guru, a revered social reformer. Muloor's residence, named Kerala Varma Soudham in honor of his close friend Kerala Varma Valiyakoyi Thampuran, was transformed into the Sarasakavi Muloor Memorial by the state government in 1989. This museum not only preserves Muloor's belongings but also houses items related to Sree Narayana Guru.
Muloor's literary contributions are significant, with his poetic masterpiece "Kirathom" earning him widespread recognition during his teens. His work "Kavi-Ramayanam," written at the age of 25, is considered a driving force behind the Temple Entry Proclamation, which allowed lower caste individuals to enter Hindu temples. Muloor's multifaceted talents extended beyond poetry; he was the first editor of the Kerala Kaumudi daily and the founder of the Padmanabhodayam English School in Mezhuveli. In 1913, Kerala Varma Valiyakoyi Thampuran conferred upon him the title of "Sarasakavi."
Muloor was also active in politics and social reform, serving as a member of the Sree Moolam Praja Sabha, the precursor to today's Legislative Assembly, and as vice-president of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam. He passed away in 1931, but his legacy continues through the Muloor Memorial, which aims to educate future generations about his contributions to literature and social reform. The memorial is also known for the "Ezhuthiniruthu" ceremony, marking the beginning of a child's writing and reading journey.
