Nileshwaram
Nileshwaram, a beautiful village around 40 kms from Kasaragod town, has a peaceful, quiet, laid-back vibe. Once known as the cultural capital of the district, it was the erstwhile home to the Nileshwar Rajas who migrated from Kozhikode to Nileshwaram over 600 years ago.Â
This little town has the best of all worlds. Laced with the charming allure of both backwaters as well as beaches, Nileshwaram is much sought after by those who seek a serene getaway. Apart from being a haven for those who love nature, Nileshwaram is also a much loved destination for those who are culture, art and history enthusiasts. This is due to the abundance of serpent groves (also known as kavus), ancient temples and palaces here.Â
The most prominent among the palaces is the Nileshwaram Palace, the erstwhile seat of the Nileshwar Rajas. The palaces, also known as Kovilakoms, are a testimony to the architectural brilliance of ancient artisans. The finesse of the sculptures and woodwork is in itself a sight to behold. The Thekke Kovilakom, Kinavoor Kovilakom and Kovilakom Chira are some of the other palaces of bygone times. Today the two storied Nileshwaram Palace functions as the centre of folklore for the Department of Archaeology.Â
Another major attraction here is the serpent groves which are usually found close to the traditional ancestral homes in Kerala. They are considered sacred and have idols of snakes that are worshipped on a regular basis. These sacred groves are relevant at an environmental level too for they function as biodiversity hotspots that are home to numerous birds, squirrels and other flora and fauna.Â
The true essence of Nileshwaram lies in its vibrant tapestry of culture and tradition. A place where Theyyam is held regularly, the very fabric of this land called Nileshwaram is woven in a sense of devout passion and a rich legacy of heritage.

Where Shades of History Mingle with Nature's Embrace. Nestled like a sentinel on Kerala’s northern shores, Kasaragod proudly displays its crown jewel - Bekal Fort, a behemoth of history kissed by the Arabian Sea’s azure embrace.
Described as the land of Forts and Gods, Kasaragod is noted for Theyyam, a performing art that blends dance, myth, drama, music, art and theatrics. The magnificent key-hole shaped Bekal Fort is an architectural wonder. The northernmost district of Kerala, Kasaragod is also renowned for its hills, water bodies, and coir and handloom industry
Kasaragod has stood witness to the settlement of various human communities within its borders that came in the wake of military invasions, commercial travels and diplomatic missions. Subsequently their languages and their cultures nourished the adoptive region, and Kasaragod became a land of seven tongues
