Pakshipathalam
One of the finest trekking spots of the country, Pakshipathalam is situated in Brahmagiri Hills and is about 7 km from Thirunelly in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is a formation of large boulders at the northern end of the Brahmagiri Hills, and home to several species of birds. At1740 m above the sea level, it is a popular destination of adventure tourists, ornithologists and nature-lovers.
Historical Significance
It is believed that Garuda, the King of birds, stands guard over his subjects at Pakshipathalam. Pakshipathalam, means’ birds in the nether regions’.
Pakshipathalam has been mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. The caves here are said to have been used by the ‘Pandavas’, the five legendary brothers, who are central figures of Mahabharata. Lord Rama, the Hindu God, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and his brother Lakshmana is also said to have visited this place during his exile. Â
A Trek for Bird Lovers
Pakshipathalam can only be accessed only through a rugged trekking route through deciduous forests, streams, steep hills and narrow rocky caves. The trek which starts from Thirunelly takes around 3 to 4 hours one way.
Around the natural rock cave at Pakshipathalam, there is a large avian colony which makes it an ornithologist’s paradise. The thick evergreen forests provide a safe haven to rare birds such as the ‘Edible Nest Swiftlet.’ It is believed that this bird’s nest is made up of hardened saliva.Â
Visitors to Pakshipathalam can have the experience of a diverse ecosystem that includes Giant Malabar squirrels, gaurs, and elephants. The place also has a temple and a watchtower from which you can get a panoramic view of the surrounding forests.
Other attractions along the route include the Garudapara rock, known for its eagle-shaped projection, and Papanasini stream believed to possess purifying properties.
