Pandavan Para, also known as the Rock of the Pandavas, is a scenic spot located in Urukunnu near Thenmala in Kollam District, Kerala. The name of this site is inspired by the legendary Pandavas from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. This location is an ideal picnic spot, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and mythological significance.
At the base of the hill, there is a serene temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the place. As you ascend the hill, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of Thenmala's surrounding landscapes, including the nearby hills, dense forests, the Kallada Dam, and the tranquil lake behind it. The railway line passing through the mountain bases and arched stone bridges adds to the scenic charm.
At the summit, you will find a rocky outcrop with two pedestal rocks on the northern side and a temple towards the south. The crisp, chilly winds at the top provide a refreshing atmosphere, and from here, you can gaze towards the eastern flank, where it is believed that the ancient heroes of the Mahabharata once took refuge.
