Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple

Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple

Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple

A revered riverside temple in Kannur dedicated to Lord Muthappan, where daily Theyyam rituals, unique offerings, and inclusive traditions create a deeply spiritual experience.

Situated on the serene banks of the Valapattanam River, Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple, located 10 km from Thaliparamba in Kannur district, is one of northern Kerala's most revered pilgrimage sites. Unlike traditional temples, it welcomes devotees from all religions and castes, emphasizing Lord Muthappan's role as a protector of the downtrodden. The presiding deity is believed to be a divine manifestation of both Lord Vishnu (Thiruvappana) and Lord Shiva (Vellatom).

The temple is steeped in fascinating local folklore. Legend speaks of a child named Muthappan, known for his appetite for dried fish, toddy, and meat. Cast out from his family for his peculiar behaviour, the child was later revealed to be a divine incarnation. Devotion to Lord Muthappan grew from these tales, and the temple became a hub for spiritual seekers.

What sets Parassinikadavu Temple apart is its daily Theyyam ritual, performed by members of the Vannan community, with pujas conducted by the Thiyya community. Unlike seasonal Theyyam performances elsewhere, this sacred art form is the temple's primary mode of worship. Witnessing a Theyyam performance here is a profound spiritual experience, as the deity is believed to communicate through the performer. The offerings at the temple are as unique as its customs-fish, toddy, boiled black beans, and tea are given as Prasadam and distributed among the devotees.

The temple also stands out for its distinctive white, three-story structure, which deviates from traditional Kerala temple architecture. Dogs are considered sacred here, as Lord Muthappan is believed to be accompanied by a canine companion. It is customary to serve the first portion of Prasadam to a dog before it is offered to devotees.

The annual Puthari Thiruvappana Festival takes place in the first week of December. This vibrant harvest festival, also known as the Muthappan Thiruvappana Festival, includes free food and accommodation for devotees and showcases the temple's inclusive and generous spirit. - More Unique Destinations
