Payamkuttimala
Payamkuttimala, the eco-tourism spot near Vadakara in Kozhikode district, is a popular viewpoint from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of sunrise and sunset. The hill station, located 2000 feet above sea-level, provides a bird’s eye view of Vadakara and its picturesque surroundings.Â
Breathtaking Views
Payamkuttimala, also known as the Ooty of Vadakara, offers a spectacular view of the hills and valleys and Vadakara’s coastline.Â
The Thikkodi lighthouse, the rocky island Velliyam Kallu and the faraway Wayanad mountain ranges are clearly visible from the spacious viewpoint. People flock here to enjoy the mesmerising sunrise and sunset and gaze at the vast expanse of the Arabian sea.
Muthappan MadapuraÂ
The hillock, also known as Vadakara’s Ooty, houses a Muthappan Madapura, a spiritual aboard and pilgrim centre. The area comes alive during the festival held annually in the second week of January.
The highlight of the festival is the Muthappan Thira, the traditional ritual dance at the sacred place, performed wearing elaborate costumes. The dance is a kaleidoscope of colours and devotion, and the place resonates with vibrant energy during the festival.
Other Attractions
There are several other tourist centres in the vicinity. Lokanarkavu, the temple mentioned in the local folklore that narrates the story of Thacholi Othenan, a chivalrous warrior and Unniyarcha, a symbol of beauty and courage.
The virgin Chombala beach, Sand Banks, a quite estuary where Kottakkal River meets the Arabian sea, Sargalaya, the arts and crafts village and Kunjali Marakkar Memorial are the other places of interest near the hill station.
Connectivity
The viewpoint is comfortably placed with just 5 kilometres from Vadakara town. An 800-metre drive from the Lokanarkavu temple, on the Vadakara-Tiruvallur road, will take you to Payamkuttimala.
Domestic tourists ascend the hill every day to watch the splendorous sunset when the entire hill station and the surrounding valleys drape in the twilight. The tourist spot with interlocked pavements has a cafeteria, garden, stage, ornamental lamp posts and watch tower. The road to the venue is motorable and safe.
