Science and Technology Museum Complex
The Science and Technology Museum Complex in Thiruvananthapuram is a prominent hub for science education and public engagement in Kerala. Managed by the Kerala State Science & Technology Museum, this facility serves as a dynamic medium for science communication, aiming to instill a sense of curiosity and scientific temperament, particularly in young minds.
The museum features a wide array of galleries that cover topics such as electricity, electronics, power and motion mechanics, popular science, mathematics, and solar energy. It also includes exhibits on automobile engineering, biomedical engineering, and computer science. Visitors can explore over 300 exhibits that provide hands-on learning experiences in these fields.
A major attraction within the complex is the Priyadarsini Planetarium, renowned as the first hybrid planetarium in India with a tilted dome. This facility offers the ability to project the starry night sky from any location on Earth at any time, using a highly versatile opto-mechanical projector. It also boasts the largest projection screen in South India, making it an ideal venue for live astronomy classes and educational film shows.
The museum complex also includes a 3D theater, a mobile science exhibition unit, a science play park with educational play devices, and a library that is well-equipped with resources for both students and the general public. Additionally, attractions like the Energy Ball, Laserium, and Water Fountain add to the interactive learning experience.
The Kerala State Science & Technology Museum is particularly popular among students from schools, colleges, and universities. It regularly organizes science and technology awareness classes, inviting experts from various fields such as engineering, mathematics, theoretical and applied sciences, astronomy, and environmental sciences. These sessions not only draw resource persons from Thiruvananthapuram but also from other parts of the state and beyond.
The museum is open to visitors from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM, Tuesday through Sunday, with a nominal entrance fee of Rs. 15 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. It remains closed on Mondays. The museum’s location, Vikasbhavan P.O., Thiruvananthapuram, makes it easily accessible for visitors who are eager to explore the wonders of science and technology.
