The Sree Chithra Enclave Museum, nestled in the Museum Complex of the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, was developed as a personalia museum or biographical museum dedicated to the memory of the last Maharaja of the Travancore dynasty, Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma (1912-1991).
Tribute to the Travancore dynasty
The museum which was inaugurated two years after the death of the Maharajah was established to honour the invaluable contributions of the Travancore rulers to the cultural, socio-economic, and political landscape of Kerala by showcasing A series of narrative Murals as well as the personal belongings, artifacts, and historical documents from the life and rule of the illustrious Maharajah. The personal artifacts include swords, coins, stamps, and medals. A collection of old newspaper footage and deeds, providing insights into significant events in Travancore's history, is another attraction of the museum. The exhibits, which portray the socio-culutral evolution of the Travancore kingdom, serve as a fine tribute to the enduring legacy of the Travancore dynasty that ruled the kingdom from c. 1729 until 1949.
Star attraction – a golden chariot
The star attraction of the museum is the royal chariot once used by the Maharaja and Amma Maharani (Queen Mother). Designed by Maharaja Swati Tirunal Rama Varma, best known as a brilliant composer but who was also a visionary administrator and social reformer, the chariot was legendary as a symbol of regal grandeur and drew admiration from all quarters. The kings used this magnificent chariot drawn by six white horses to travel from the ceremonial entrance of the city at Poojappura to East Fort. A British officer, mesmerized by the sight, is supposed to have remark that the golden chariot would put the London Mayor's chariot to shame.
