Built by St. Thomas, the apostle of Jesus Christ, in 52 C. E., the St. Thomas Church is considered to be the first Christian church in India. Situated near the river Periyar in a village called Azhikode in Kerala, this church is also called the Marthoma Pontifical Shrine.
It is believed that the Apostle landed in Kodungalloor on November 21st, 52 C.E. and this was the first church he built to spread the message of faith and salvation across the State. In those times Kodungalloor was known as Muziris, the legendary trading port. He is also believed to have constructed other churches at Kottakkavu, Palayur, Kollam, Kokkamangalam, Niranam and Nilackal. These churches together are renowned as the ‘Ezhara pallikal’ and are considered to be important places of pilgrimage not just for those in Kerala but rather for Christians across the world. The St. Thomas Church is today, a part of the Muziris Heritage Project. The project is by far the largest heritage conservation project in India.
The bone of the right arm of St. Thomas was brought all the way from Ortona in Italy and enthroned in the present church thereby making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites for thousands of believers from across the globe.
The oldest church in Kerala, the Marthoma Pontifical Shrine is characterised by its unique architecture. The holy relics it houses and its historic significance make it one of the biggest landmarks for Christianity in the state. A place of worship that is open to all irrespective of caste, colour or creed, this church is a source of solace to many and a must visit pilgrim centre.
