Valiyaparamba Backwaters
One of the most picturesque backwater stretches in Kerala, the Valiyaparamba Backwaters is the third largest in the state. Located around 10km south of Nileswaram, this backwater stretch is fed by four different rivers including the Tejaswini River. The river has a footbridge constructed across it that is used to connect the small Achanthuruthu and Cheruvathur panchayat. This footbridge which is 400m long is considered to be the longest such bridge in God’s Own Country.
The Valiyaparamba Backwaters has several islands in it of which the backwater stretch is named after the Valiyaparamba island which is also a main fishing centre in the State. The Valiyaparamba Island is separated from the mainland by the backwaters and on elf the boundaries of this island lies the Arabian Sea making the geography extremely unique and a treat to the eyes. Sought out by tourists and travellers who seek solitude and a reprieve from the chaos of daily routines and life, the Valiyaparamba Island and backwaters are must visit destinations in the area. The intricate web of lagoons, canals and lakes that surround the area is a captivating retreat.
A haunt for nature lovers, these backwaters are teeming with life as they are also home to around 90 different species of birds. The tangled roots of the mangrove forests that fringe the waterways provide a sanctuary to a myriad variety of aquatic creatures. Around every turn, the backwaters unveil a new vista that paints a picture of virgin beauty that feels dreamlike.
You can enjoy the serene beauty of these emerald waters through the boat cruises on offer in the area. The coconut and area nut groves that fringe the shores of these backwaters give it a laid back, relaxed vibe that is extremely calming for the senses. To enjoy the place to its fullest there are houseboat terminals provided at Ayitti and Edayilakkad. To sit back on board a kettuvallom (traditional houseboat of Kerala) and relish the flora and fauna that sweeps past you at a slow, soothing pace is indeed an experience of a lifetime. These kettuvalloms are the epitome of rustic elegance as they are a luxurious way in which to explore the nuanced beauty of the backwaters while simultaneously soaking in the warm hospitality of the locals.
Another highlight of the houseboat cruises on the Valiyaparamba Backwaters is the Kerala cuisine that’s served on board. Exquisite dishes prepared with the freshest catch and ingredients, make for a culinary experience like no other. Be it the coconut milk infused curries or the delicacies prepared from local produce, every aspect of the food on offer will take your tastebuds on a journey like no other.
Nights are magical aboard these kettuvalloms that gently bob atop these waters. The shimmering moonlight casts an ethereal glow on the waters, the canopy of glittering stars, the soothing symphony of nature all around you that keeps rhythm with the gentle gurgle of the waters that surround you. Time slows down and eases you into the rhythm of nature and the timeless charm of rural Kerala.
