Velliyamkallu
Velliyamkallu, meaning "silvery white stone," is a two-acre rocky island located approximately 14 km from Payyoli in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Surrounded by the vast Arabian Sea, this island is renowned for its natural beauty, historical significance, and rugged terrain, making it a fascinating destination for adventure and history enthusiasts. The island offers stunning views of the sea and is a favored spot for sunset viewing.
The island’s surface is dotted with sharp rocks, deep caverns, and wells, creating an awe-inspiring yet challenging landscape. Apart from a plaque declaring it as the property of the Government of India, Velliyamkallu is untouched by human development. The site is deeply tied to history, notably as a strategic stronghold of Kunjali Marakkar, the naval commander of the Zamorins. The massive rock served as a lookout point for naval operations against the Portuguese, and cannonball marks on the rocks stand as reminders of these fierce battles. After the Portuguese defeated the Zamorins, protestors were thrown into the sea from the island, earning it the name "Balikkallu," or Sacrificial Stone.
Visitors can reach Velliyamkallu by taking an adventurous one-hour boat ride from Payyoli Beach. The beach itself is known for its shallow waters, ideal for swimming and water sports. However, the boat journey to the island is not recommended for children and elderly travelers, as it can be challenging. Local fishermen often guide visitors, making the trip both safe and informative.
During November and December, Payyoli Beach becomes a nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles. These endangered sea turtles arrive to lay their eggs, and a local conservation initiative called "Theeram" actively works to protect these creatures. Visitors to the area during this period can witness this remarkable natural event.
Nearby attractions include the Thikkodi Lighthouse, which was built following a shipwreck. The lighthouse offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Arabian Sea, and remnants of the wreck can still be seen. Additionally, the Moorad River near Payyoli is a haven for birdwatchers, hosting a variety of resident and migratory bird species throughout the year.
With its striking landscapes, historical tales, and rich biodiversity, Velliyamkallu and its surrounding areas provide a unique experience for those exploring the coastal treasures of Kerala.
