Vypeen Island
Vypeen Island, one of the largest of the Goshree Islands, is a captivating destination in Kochi, Kerala. Spanning an area of more than 25 km, the island is about 27 kilometers long and is connected to the mainland of Kochi by a series of bridges starting at Kalamukku. This island, which owes its origin to the heavy floods of 1341, is a blend of pristine beaches, historical landmarks, and cultural sites.
Vypeen is renowned for its charming beaches, including Cherai Beach, Kuzhuppilly Beach, Puthuvype Beach, and Munambam Beach. These beaches are some of the longest in Kochi, offering scenic beauty and tranquil surroundings for visitors. Munambam Fishing Harbour, the largest fishing harbour in Kochi, is also located on the island, making it a significant spot for observing local fishing activities.
The island is dotted with numerous temples such as the ancient Elamkunnapuzha Subrahmanya Temple, Cherai Temple, Palathankulangara Devi Temple, and Azeekal Varahamoorthy Temple. These temples add to the cultural richness of Vypeen, attracting devotees and tourists alike.
Among the major tourist attractions is the Lighthouse at Puthuvype, which opens from 3 pm to 5 pm daily, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Cherai Beach is another must-visit spot, known for its golden sands and serene ambiance. Historical sites include Pallipuram Fort, a 16th-century Portuguese fort that is part of the Muziris Heritage Project, situated at the northern extremity of the island.
Vypeen's history is deeply intertwined with Portuguese influence. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, introducing Catholicism and establishing many churches, including the famous Church of Our Lady of Hope. The Pallipuram Fort, also built by the Portuguese, stands as a testament to this period. Recent research indicates that some Anglo-Indians on the island still use an early form of Creole Portuguese influenced by Malayalam, showcasing the lasting legacy of Portuguese colonization.
The development of Vypeen accelerated under Portuguese influence, transforming it from a small fishing community into a densely populated island. The Goshree bridge now connects Vypeen to Kochi, replacing the earlier ferry system. Njarakkal serves as the business center of the island, further contributing to its growth and accessibility.
Despite its development, Vypeen retains many unexplored spots that are of interest to tourists. The lighthouse at Ochanthuruthu, adjacent to a beautiful beach, is one such hidden gem. These less-known locations offer a peaceful retreat and an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and serenity of the island.
Vypeen Island is a unique destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural richness. Whether you're exploring its pristine beaches, visiting its ancient temples, or delving into its Portuguese heritage, Vypeen promises a memorable and enriching experience for all its visitors.
