Thrissur Zoo
Located in the heart of Thrissur city, the Thrissur Zoo is one of the oldest zoological parks in India, with a history dating back to 1885. Spanning 13.5 acres, this zoo is a sanctuary for a diverse array of animals, reptiles, and birds, and is known for housing wildlife in natural habitats with meticulous upkeep. As one of the two zoological parks in Kerala, the Thrissur Zoo remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
The zoo is home to more than 50 species of wild animals, including tigers, deer, lions, sloth bears, monkeys, hippopotamuses, camels, crocodiles, and the rare Lion-Tailed Macaque. Visitors can also explore a dedicated snake house, where they can observe cobras, pythons, kraits, vipers, and rat snakes up close. Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot a variety of birds such as the Pink Pelican, Emu, Hornbill, and African Grey Parrot. The presence of butterflies like the Blue Mormon, Common Mime, Southern Birdwing, and Mottled Emigrant adds an extra layer of charm to the zoo.
In addition to its diverse wildlife, the Thrissur Zoo complex also includes a Zoological Garden, a Botanical Garden, a Natural History Museum, an Art Museum, and a 3D Theatre. The Art Museum is particularly noteworthy, housing an exquisite collection of wood carvings, metal sculptures, Kathakali figurines, ancient jewelry, and traditional Kerala lamps.
The zoo is open to the public every day except Mondays, with visiting hours from 09:00 am to 01:00 pm and 02:00 pm to 05:00 pm. The zoo is an ideal destination for a relaxed and educational outing, where visitors can learn about the various species through informative plaques and enjoy the serene environment.
A new zoo is currently under construction at Puthur in Thrissur, and plans are underway to gradually relocate the animals and birds from the old zoo at Chembukkav to the new facility. This development aims to further enhance the living conditions of the zoo’s inhabitants and improve the visitor experience.
