If a birdwatcher dies and is told that he can spend the rest of his time on a paradise he chooses on earth, he might pick a beautiful spot on earth named Thattekkad. The name signifies a flat piece of wooded land. What an understatement for such a magical piece of earth!
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary with barely 25 square kilometers, which is the first bird sanctuary of Kerala, is also one of the most popular ones in the country. Thanks to the world-renowned ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, the legendary ‘Bird man of India’, who during his Travancore - Cochin ornithological survey found to his pleasant surprise this patch of evergreen lowland forest on the banks of Periyar. Today the sanctuary is known after his name, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

Boating in Periyar
The place offers one of the best boating options in River Periyar. A brief ride on the river might take you close to cormorants, kingfishers, and many other birds, which feed off fish and other small creatures in water.

TREKKING TRAILS
Salim Ali Bird Trail
A trail for chasing the birds, Salim Ali Bird Trail is a self-guided trekking programme for the daily visitors. A walk through the interior of the woods will be a great experience and it also help you in spotting and identifying those birds, which otherwise for the untrained eyes of a traveller, remain invisible. This trail includes a visit to the Butterfly garden and the interpretation centre. You may also have a talk with the bird monitoring cell here to know about the kinds of birds at Thattekkad.

Black Baza Trail
This is a bird watching trail to the wild world of birds at Thattekkad. This three hours guided trail will take you to the core of Sanctuary. The exhilarating joys of being in birds’ own country have to be experienced right from early morning. You will be woken up from your sleep by a birdsong. The package includes a guide, entry fee and cost of one bottle drinking water. Maximum 15 persons in a trail.

Trogon Trail
Another bird watching trail initiated at Thattekkad is the Trogon trail. What the guides might impart you as your first lessons of observation and bird watching will stay with you all your life. Paid Nature Camp
