Situated 1600 m above sea level, Munnar was a popular retreat for the British. It has now evolved into a proper tourist town with a number of resorts, hotels and restaurants coming up in the area. It is also famous for the special Neelakurinji flower that blooms here every 12 years. The hills turn blue and nature lovers come in large numbers to view this natural phenomenon in person. Munnar gives ample trekking options to enthusiastic guests.
Trekking trail through the rhododendron valleys of Munnar
Let us now explore some of the options in and around Munnar that would provide travellers with ample opportunities to enjoy the captivating hill station of Munnar. Meesappulimala - a destination for the highly adventurous is the second highest peak in the Western Ghats and a trekking trail via Rhodo Valley.
Travel a distance of 24 km from Munnar via Mattupetty through Aruvikkad estate and you will reach the base camp of Meesappulimala. The journey from base camp to Rhodo Valley is in the jeep and is 4 km and is the last point accessible by any four wheelers. En route you can see the Pandava cave.
At night stay in the midst of cloud top at Rhodo Mansion and in the tents and the next day climb to the peak amidst rhododendron trees. Stay can be in your choice, they are providing the stay in three options. This is a hard trekking and needs to do basic preparation. Stay in the outdoors
Stay over in the tents and enjoy the chillness of Munnar in the Base Camp. Situated at an altitude of about 6000 feet, Kerala Forest Development Corporation offers to stay over programmes. Enjoy the night in the outdoors by sitting around the campfire and savour a delicious supper.
Next morning you can go for an adventurous trek up to Meesapulimala or Rhodo Valley. Maximum of 40 persons are allowed for a single night tent stay at Base Camp. The package includes breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner. Campfire is also included.

Sky Cottage, is another stay over programme organized at Munnar by KFDC. This lonely cottage on a cliff facing a waterfall also offers amazing views of Anamudi peaks. If it is a clear sky, the transparent ceiling of the cottage gives you the view of starry sky. Next morning you can go for an adventurous trek up to Meesapulimala. Three persons can avail this programme.

The best choice for those who wish to explore the altitudinal starry night is the Rhoda Mansion. Night stay offered at Rhodo Valley has elephant trench protection. Campfire is there and food is also included. The group can climb the ‘Meesapulimala’ peak in next day.
