Chettikulangara Bharani is one of the spectacular festivals celebrated at Chettikulangara Temple near Mavelikara in Alappuzha. Held during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March), the festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The entire town comes to life and the merriment covers its landscape.
The primary attractions during the festival are the Kettukazcha. These are giant structures that are decorated with cloth, flowers, and ornaments. It is an important moment for the 13 'karas' or regions that comprise the area. Thousands work to make these 90 to 100 ft. tall structures. There are three categories - the Theru (chariot), Kuthira (horse) and three other figures of Bhima, Hanuman and Panchali (popular characters from Indian epics). These are taken to the temple via city roads and the populace along with visitors joins in on the celebration. There are many art and folk shows that are performed as well that make it a memorable experience annually.
