Cochin Carnival
Fort Kochi ushers in the New Year with unparalleled excitement and splendor through the Cochin Carnival, a visual spectacle held during the last two weeks of December. Organized by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Ernakulam, the festival highlights the rich, diverse history of Fort Kochi with flea markets, cultural performances, food festivals, bike and cycle races, rallies, beach football, various arts, and games.
A notable highlight of the festival is the burning of a giant Pappanji—a model of an elderly man in a suit and beard—at midnight on December 31st, symbolizing the farewell to the outgoing year. Originating from centuries-old New Year traditions in this historic town, the Cochin Carnival gained its distinct identity 38 years ago during the UN International Year of Youth, transforming into a participatory, secular festival. It has since become a platform for the diverse community of this multi-ethnic town to come together and celebrate the New Year.
Annually, over ninety clubs collaborate under the leadership of the Sub-Collector (RDO), Fort Kochi, to form the Carnival Committee and organize the festival. The festivities commence on the second Sunday of December with the “Ceremony of Peace and Solidarity” at the War Memorial in Fort Kochi, attended by dignitaries such as the Indian Navy, the CO of INS Dronacharya, the Hon. Mayor, the Sub Collector, ex-servicemen, the church choir, and school children. The Carnival Flag is then hoisted at Vasco Square on the third Sunday by the Hon. Kochi MLA, followed by flag raisings from participating clubs and organizations.
The festival features an array of competitions and activities, including beach football, beach volleyball, beach motorbike racing, swimming, kayaking, Kochuvanchi rowing, angling, cross country races, cycling, Thekkootttam Kali, kite flying, badminton, boxing, wrestling, carroms, painting, drawing, mehandi, kolam, rangoli, quizzes, and fun games. Evenings are filled with traditional music, dances, and performing arts.
The entire length of K B Jacob Road, the main carnival thoroughfare, is adorned with decorations and illuminated with thousands of stars, creating a festive atmosphere. Each event is sponsored and conducted by the participating organizations. The burning of the “Pappa” on the beach at midnight on December 31st, amid traditional music and fireworks, marks the transition from one year to the next.
The festival concludes on New Year’s Day with the Carnival Rally, the most participative and colorful cultural parade in the state. This vibrant procession includes folk arts, masquerades, merrymakers, music, floats, bands, martial arts, and more, passing through illuminated Chinese fishing nets, decorated trees, festooned streets, and cheering crowds. The best participants are awarded the prestigious Cochin Mayor’s Trophy.
Folk arts and traditions take center stage during the celebrations, offering visitors and tourists a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. Since its inception, the Carnival has been supported by the Kochi Municipal Corporation, the State Tourism Department, India Tourism, and the District Tourism Promotion Council, making it the largest annual tourist attraction in Kerala.
In Kerala, festival dates are decided in accordance with the Malayalam calendar and the local traditions and customs. We have calculated the festival dates based on these. But there can be changes in the dates according the customs and rituals associated with each place of worship. As such, these should be considered only as approximate dates and have to be confirmed with the local authorities.
