Kandambathu Kaliyattam
The Kandambathu Kaliyattam, taking place from December 3 to 5, 2024, is a captivating festival held at the Kokkanasseri Kandambathu Ara near Kannur, Kerala. This traditional celebration brings to life the sacred art of Theyyam, where performers embody deities, creating a mesmerizing spiritual and cultural experience. Kokkanasseri Kandambathu Ara Vallar Kulangara Bhagavathy Devasthanam divinity was brought from Thaliyil Mana by Pothuval women, who concealed the deities in their waistbands in the form of turmeric pieces. The Ara is a unique Kavu (sacred grove) where traditional customs and rituals are preserved in their original form.Â
The festival showcases a vibrant array of Theyyam performances, including Kannikkorumakan, Bhairavan, Kuttisasthan, Angakulangara Bhagavathy, Raktha Chamundi, Panayakkatt Bhagavathy, Madayil Chamundi, Vishnumoorthy and Vallar Kulangara Bhagavathy. Dressed in elaborate costumes and striking face paint, the performers captivate spectators/devotees as they transform themselves into living manifestations of the divine.Â
The ritual begins with Thottam, an invocation where the performer gradually transitions into the deity’s persona. Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of traditional instruments like the perumbara, kuzhal, chenda, ilathalam, veekni and chermangalam, the Theyyam dance is a powerful and graceful expression of devotion. During the performance, the artiste is revered as the deity, offering blessings to the devout gathering.
The festival also includes the Vellattam, a simpler prelude to the full-fledged Theyyam performance, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the spiritual atmosphere. Kandambathu Kaliyattam is not just a cultural spectacle but a deep-rooted tradition that celebrates the divine, and preserves Kerala’s rich heritage.
