Machattu Mamangam
Located in Vadakkancherry, Thrissur district, the Machattu Mamangam is a vibrant and culturally rich temple festival celebrated at the Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple. This five-day festival, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi, is famous for its grand procession featuring Kuthirakolams, or elegantly decorated horse effigies.
The highlight of Machattu Mamangam is the Kuthirakolams, which are intricately decorated and taken out in a grand procession on the concluding day. The sight of these horse effigies, welcomed with a riot of colors, cheers, and applause, is a spectacular experience. The chendamelam, traditional percussion music, adds to the festive atmosphere, creating an extravagant spectacle in the temple courtyard. Various cultural programs are also held throughout the festival days, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The festival is not just a religious event but a significant part of the local identity. It is organized by five desams (villages) – Karumathra, Viruppakka, Mangalam, Parlikadu, and Manalithara – in a competitive spirit. Additionally, the desams of Thekkumkara, Punnamparambu, and Panangattukara take the initiative in conducting the pooram once every three years. The festival begins on the first Friday of the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February), with the main Vela celebrated on the following Tuesday.
According to legend, the local king originally wished to conduct the festival with live horses to compete with the elephant festival Uthralikkavu Pooram. However, due to the lack of horses in Kerala and the difficulty of domesticating them, he decided to use artificial horses instead. This tradition has continued, and the wooden horse effigies have become a distinctive feature of the festival.
The festival kicks off with a parapurappadu (procession) on the first Friday of Kumbham, leading up to the grand Kuthira Vela on the following Tuesday. The festival concludes the next day, leaving lasting memories for all who participate and witness the events.
Machattu Mamangam is more than just a temple festival; it is a celebration of the community's cultural and spiritual heritage. The procession of Kuthirakolams, the vibrant cultural programs, and the spirited participation of the local desams make it a unique and unforgettable event. For those looking to experience the rich traditions of Kerala, the Machattu Mamangam at Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple is a must-visit event.
