Navarathri Sangeetholsavam
The Navarathri Sangeetholsavam, held at the historic Navarathri Mandapam in the Fort Palace complex of Thiruvananthapuram, is a prestigious nine-day music festival that draws classical music enthusiasts from across the globe. Navaratri Mandapam is a prominent pavilion situated in the eastern entrance of the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. It is located on the lower floor of Kuthira Malika, near the eastern entrance. This annual event, celebrated during the auspicious Navarathri period, features some of the most revered artists in the classical music industry. The highlight of the festival is the rendition of kritis (compositions) by Swathi Thirunal, the legendary composer and former ruler of Travancore. The venue’s unique acoustics, achieved through earthen pots of varying shapes and sizes suspended from the ceiling, ensure an unparalleled auditory experience. The stage, illuminated by oil lamps, adds a traditional charm to the performances, making it a mesmerizing experience for all attendees.
Navarathri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Devi over nine days. It is celebrated with various rituals and festivities throughout Kerala, but the Navarathri Sangeetholsavam at Navarathri Mandapam stands out for its cultural and musical significance. This mandapam, specially constructed for the Navaratri festival, holds significant spiritual and cultural importance. During the Navaratri festival, devotees visiting Lord Padmanabhaswamy have the opportunity to witness various artistic performances, making it a golden opportunity for spiritual and cultural enrichment. Other notable venues for Navarathri celebrations in Kerala include Panachikkadu Saraswati Temple in Kottayam, Thunchan Parambu in Malappuram, Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur, and Chottanikkara Devi Temple in Ernakulam.
The festival concludes with the Vidyarambham ceremony, where children are initiated into the world of letters. This tradition, along with many others, has been meticulously preserved by the royal family of Travancore. According to legend, the Chera King had promised Sage Kambar to conduct the Navarathri Festival annually in honor of Sri Saraswathi, a promise that has been upheld to this day. Despite the relocation of the capital from Padmanabhapuram to Thiruvananthapuram by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, the goddess is still brought to Thiruvananthapuram every year for the festival in a grand procession.
The Navarathri Sangeetholsavam is not just a music festival; it is a spiritual offering. The music concerts are considered offerings to the goddess, and the audience participates in this devotion through attentive listening, embodying the concepts of "Sravanam" and "Keerthanam." The concerts begin with the Thodaya Mangalam and Ganapathi Stuthi by the Mullamoodu Bhagavathars, whose musical lineage dates back to the time of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal. The main concerts, featuring eminent musicians, follow a structured format with no interruptions, applause, or competitive elements between performers.
The festival's ambiance is enhanced by the subtle fragrance of fresh flowers, sandalwood, incense, and camphor. The concerts start precisely at 6 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m., maintaining a disciplined and reverent atmosphere. This environment allows for a deep connection with the music and the divine, making the Navarathri Sangeetholsavam a unique and spiritually enriching experience.
