Rayiranellur Hill
The hills of Rayiranellur near Pattambi, Palakkad, are an enigmatic destination where myth meets history. Every year, on the first of the Malayalam month Thulam, Rayiranellur Hill becomes a bustling pilgrim spot as thousands ascend the 500-meter hill to seek blessings from Goddess Durga.
Rayiranellur holds historical and cultural significance in Kerala. Centuries ago, the mystic Naranathu Bhranthan, one of the twelve children of sage Vararuchi and his Pariah wife, lived here. He was known for rolling a huge boulder up the hill each day, only to let it roll back down, symbolizing the cyclical nature of rise and fall in life. Legend has it that on a Thulam 1, Goddess Durga appeared before him during one of his daily tasks, leading to a profound debate about existence. Impressed by his knowledge, the Goddess blessed him.
Today, a Durga temple stands at the hilltop, attracting thousands of pilgrims who trek up the hill on Thulam 1 (mid-October). Special poojas and offerings are performed at the temple in the three days leading up to this date. A huge statue of Naranathu has been installed on the hill, and after praying at the temple, devotees circumambulate the statue before leaving.
The pilgrimage also sees participation from neighboring Tamil Nadu, with local police and district administration ensuring the safety of pilgrims during the trek. The site is steeped in mysticism and offers a unique spiritual experience.
Rayiranellur Hill, with its remarkable statue of Naranathu and the Durga Temple, provides an enchanting setting for the annual pilgrimage. The hill also draws visitors during the Karthika asterism in the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam, adding to its spiritual allure.
