Tour of Thekkady
The Tour of Thekkady, celebrated as India’s premier Gran Fondo cycling event, returns in 2025, promising a thrilling combination of competitive races and serene tours through Kerala’s breathtaking landscapes. Beginning in the picturesque backwaters of Kottayam, the route winds its way through serene lakes, lush rubber and tea plantations and aromatic cardamom estates before culminating in the verdant expanse of Thekkady. With an elevation gain exceeding 3000 metres, the event replicates the challenge of the Tour de France stages, offering participants an unparalleled cycling experience in the heart of Kerala.
The event caters to a diverse group of cycling enthusiasts, featuring both a competitive race and a leisurely tour. The race category is divided into four distinct groups: the Team Race, where teams of four compete, ensuring that at least three riders of the same team finish the race together; the Men-Elite, open to cyclists above 18 years with an 8-hour cutoff time; the Men-Masters, designed for participants aged 40 and above with a 9-hour cutoff time; and the Women’s Race, open to women above 18 years, also with a 9-hour cutoff time. For those seeking a less competitive experience, the Tour Category allows participants to complete the route in 14 hours, offering ample time to appreciate the scenic beauty and tranquillity along the way.
The Tour of Thekkady takes cyclists on a meticulously planned route that starts in Kottayam, passing through vibrant locales like Ettumanoor, Pala, Neeloor and Muttom, before crossing the iconic Kulamavu and Idukki Dams. The journey continues through Kattappana, finally reaching the lush greenery of Thekkady, a destination renowned for its rainforest and wildlife. Cyclists traverse low-traffic roads that cut through some of Kerala’s most serene and picturesque landscapes, making the ride as much about the journey as the destination. Along the way, participants experience Kerala’s diverse tourism circuit, from tranquil villages and shimmering lakes to dense forests and vibrant estates.
The event aspires to become the largest international cycling event in India, attracting cyclists from across the globe. Its meticulously organized structure, challenging terrain and stunning backdrop make it a unique blend of adventure and cultural immersion. The Tour of Thekkady is more than a test of endurance; it is an opportunity to explore Kerala’s natural splendour and cultural heritage on two wheels. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist looking for a competitive challenge or an adventurer eager to soak in the beauty of Kerala, this event promises an unforgettable experience for you.
