FAQ

Can I see Coconut oil-making in Kerala?

Kerala is a leading producer of coconut and coconut oil. Some of the methods used in the production of coconut oil in Kerala are:
Chekku Oil Mills: In this process, a wooden mortar and pestle or a granite roller grinder is used to extract oil from coconuts. The process is slow but preserves the natural flavour and aroma of the oil. Chekku oil mills can be found in many villages across Kerala.

Ayurvedic Manufacturing Units: Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, uses coconut oil extensively. Some Ayurvedic manufacturing units in Kerala allow visitors to witness the oil-making process, which often involves a combination of traditional and modern techniques.

Coconut harvesting typically happens throughout the year, but the peak season is from November to February. If you want to see the entire process from harvesting to oil extraction, one should plan the trip accordingly. Though coconut oil production is widespread in Kerala, the districts of Alappuzha and Kollam are particularly famous for it. While some chekku mills might be open to visitors spontaneously, it's a good idea to contact Ayurvedic manufacturing units beforehand to find out their policy on allowing visitors.
