Can I see Spice Plantation in Kerala?

The wealth of spices of India, especially from Kerala, have attracted traders and travellers from far off lands like the Arabs and the Chinese since 11CE.

In Kerala, the district of Idukki takes the top spot for the cultivation of a variety of spices. The regions of Kumily and Thekkady in Idukki district have ideal soil and weather conditions for spice plantations to thrive. Kerala produces the major chunk of cardamom in India, the majority of which comes from the plantations in Kumily.

In Kerala, there are many private holdings in the districts of Idukki and Wayanad that offer visitors a spice plantation experience. In these plantations, noted for its cultivation of pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves, turmeric and ginger, some have old plantation bungalows that offer farm stays and tours inside their plantation property.

These spice plantations help visitors get familiar with the many aspects of spice cultivation like propagation, planting methods, growing stages, caring, harvesting and processing. And at some places one may also get a chance to see and use some of the final products made out of these spices. Spice tours are usually conducted throughout the year.

In Kerala, one can easily come across tour operators as well as individuals offering spice plantation tours.
